Taking your first step you can apply for your provisional driving licence three months before your 17th Birthday. You obtain your driving licence by sending the D1 form, available at the local Beeston Post Office, with either your passport or birth certificate and photo. Your valid provisional driving licence should arrive within 2 weeks, and you will then be able to take your theory test and start taking driving lessons with Beeston Driving School Leeds.

Once you have received your provisional licence, what’s next?

Beeston Driving School Leeds instructors will follow the Driving and Vehicle standards agency guidelines to give you a structured driving lesson and at a pace that will be suited to your ability. We can pick you up from your home, your workplace or school, college (this must be organized prior to driving lesson). Feedback will be given at the end of every lesson and will be recorded in the progress record sheet. This will be used to assess progress and formulate future learning plans.

Generally pupils who stick to a 2 hour lesson make better progress, however everyone is different and the best lesson length will be discussed with you to suit your circumstances.

What is the structure of the lessons?

Vehicle Handling

The first stage of learning to drive is all about handling the vehicle properly and in a safe manner. You will be taught how to:

  • Understand and use the vehicle controls
  • Move off & stop at the side of the road
  • Steer the car correctly
  • Select an appropriate gear and control the clutch (manual cars)
  • Turn left and right through corners
  • Emerge from a junction safely
  • Move off from an uphill or downhill position
  • Perform an emergency stop (in a controlled situation)
  • Recognise and approach crossroads and junctions

Manoeuvres

During your training you will also be taught how to perform a number of manoeuvres including:

  • Turn in the road
  • Reversing left around a corner
  • Reverse parking at the road side
  • Reverse parking into a car park bay

Dealing with Traffic

In the course of your lessons you should be able to:

  • Recognise & respond to road signs and road markings correctly
  • Respond appropriately to oncoming traffic situations
  • Use your mirrors defensively in response to the road ahead
  • Use your own signals and respond to the signals of other road users correctly
  • Approach and deal with roundabouts correctly
  • Anticipate traffic lights
  • Make reasonable progress given the traffic, weather and road conditions
  • Position correctly for your intended action
  • Approach more complex and unusual junctions correctly

Your driving instructor will teach each skill separately and gradually build your ability to handle multiple situations that can occur while driving.

Planning Ahead & Anticipation

One of the hallmarks of a good driver is the ability to anticipate potential hazards on the road ahead. New drivers will only be able to manage this level of competency once they have mastered the skills of vehicle handing and can deal effectively with various traffic situations.

Drivers who are able to anticipate likely situations and plan for them accordingly are less likely to be involved in an accident. They tend to be more alert of their speed and are able to prioritise their response to observations of the road ahead.

These skills become particularly important when driving at higher speeds for example on dual carriageways and country roads. Learner drivers should be introduced to handling higher speeds during their training however these skills are not always tested upon and can sometimes be overlooked by pupils taking their test too soon.

Whilst you are taking driving lessons with Beeston Driving School Leeds driving instructor you can be preparing for your theory test.

What to expect on the Theory Test

The DVSA theory test consists of a multiple choice section and a hazard perception test. You must arrive at least 15 minutes before your allocated time. Failure to do this will result in your appointment being cancelled.

You will need to be successful in both parts in order to pass overall, so we suggest getting the recommended reading under your belt and attempting as many mock test as possible to familiarize yourself with the structure of the theory test.

The multiple choice section is presented with a touch screen computer. You will be expected to answer a total of 50 questions; answering at least 43 correct in order to pass. With the hazard perception test, your responses are recorded through the use of a computer mouse button. You must click as early as possible when you see a developing hazard with a maximum score of 5 points per hazard. There are a total of 15 developing hazards giving a possible total of 75. You must score at least 44 in order to pass this part of the test. Beeston Driving School Leeds offer pupils Theory and Hazard Perception CD at price of £11.99.

If you fail one part of the test, you will have to retake both parts.

Practical test

How many driving lessons will I need to pass my practical test?

A lot of pupils will always ask the old favorite question: "How many lessons will I need to pass my test?" The honest answer is that we don't know. According to the Driving and Vehicle standards agency (the people who take your practical test), “Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 40 hours of professional training combined with 20 hours of private practice”.

There are numerous driving practical test tips and advice that will help you leading up to the big day; however the key things to remember are what your examiner will be looking out for a smooth drive and they will be observing an overall high and safe standard of driving.

On the practical test day the examiner will check you driving licence and ask you to read a car number plate to check your eyesight. Once the eyesight test is satisfactory, you will be then asked to lead to your where you’re car is parked. On the way you will be asked two of the “Show me” and “tell me” questions. One question can be asked under the Bonnet and One inside the car.

The examiner will check your car is in good road worthy condition. Once inside, you will be asked to “follow the road ahead, unless road markings and road signs tell you otherwise or I say in which case I will do so in plenty of time”.

The test will last approximately 35-40 minutes. In the practical test you will be asked to do one maneuver from a reverse around a corner, turn in the road, or reverse parking. You might also be asked to do an emergency stop. In order to pass your practical test you must not make more than 15 minor driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults are allowed. One of the serious or dangerous faults accumulates to failure.

You should be familiar with the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook beforehand in order to ensure you can answer this ‘Show me, tell me’ part of the test. If you are planning on using your own car, we recommend you check the test vehicle requirements on the Direct Gov website prior to your test. Some vehicles can’t be used for safety reasons, which could result in you losing your test fee.

After completing the practical test the examiner will you give you the result straight-away. If you fail, they will explain where you went wrong and how you can improve next time. If you pass then the examiner will take your provisional licence and arrange for a full UK licence to be sent to your address. The examiner will give you a pass certificate so that you can drive on all types of roads. The Full U-K licence will arrive within two weeks.

Independent Driving

From the 4 October 2010, an ‘Independent driving’ section was introduced to the practical driving test in the UK. Which means that at any point during your test your examiner will request that you drive to a specific destination; either by following a sequence of directions, road signs; or both, for approximately ten minutes?

Your examiner will offer you a diagram/map to show your route, don’t worry it’s not essential you follow these exact directions. If you take the wrong turn the examiner will get you back on route again. After the approx ten minutes the examiner will say, I will now direct you as normal.

Kieron,Leeds, Passed at Horsforth Test Center

I would like to say a BIG Thanks to Driving School Leeds for helping me to Pass my Practical Test first time. I had taken a lot of practice before the test day. I knew exactly what to expect. The Toyota car that I learnt in is very easy to use. The Instructor is very good at portraying the examiners role. I am a very quick learner but I have to say with out the proper guidance from the instructor at Driving School Leeds, I could have not got it right first time. I am going to get my sister now to get her provisional licence and start learning with Driving School Leeds.

Kleiber, Holbeck, Leeds, Passed at Harehills Test Center

My school friend told me about the driving instructor at Driving School Leeds whom he passed with first time when he was 17 years old. I booked in a driving lesson and found it difficult initially with the Diesel Toyota Yaris. I had previously taken lessons in a Ford Focus car, but once I got used to the Toyota Yaris it was very easy to manoeuvre. I found it easy to do the reversing exercises', the turn in the road, the parallel parking and the reverse around the corner. I had been with another driving instructor and had wasted my time talking about other stuff not related to driving.

The Driving instructor at Driving School Leeds told me to get more serious with the driving and put more focus on driving and less talking. At that point I knew I was going to pass because this instructor was more serious in the job than the one before. No Surprise to me I passed with flying colours, I will be definitely recommending Driving School Leeds. I aim to get my car next month with the help of the Driving Instructor. !

David, Cottingly, Leeds, Passed at Harehills Test Center

I had couple of tests before and had never managed to pass, always failed for one reason or another. I wanted a change. I searched for a local driving school in leeds and came across one in Beeston. I arranged my first lesson with the instructor, I had a one hour session with the local driving instructor and he told me I was good driver and that there was nothing he could see that was wrong in my driving. He then suggested that he take me to the test areas that I had been on for my test. Then my faults all came apparent. I would get nervous when I knew I was in test conditions and would move off with cars behind. The driving instructor offered other solutions to help me to get more calm. The one that worked was Kalm tablet. I tried them before my mock test and they seem to get me less minors. On the day I had the senior examiner and sat with me and my driving instructor and managed to Pass my test with two minors only. I have to say that the driving instructor at Driving School Leeds helped to get over my nerves as well as help me to pass my practical test. Thanks once again. I am now looking forward to driving on the roads.

Mr "T" Talah, Leeds, Passed at Harehills Test Center

My brother in law booked a driving lesson for me with the Driving School Leeds driving instructor. I had been driving my dads car abroad and thought that I could drive in the U.K as well but the rules and regulations in the country are different to where I came from. The Driving Instructor had a difficult job. But No, he showed me the rules and got rid of my bad habits and put me forward for the test. I passed, I was very happy. I have got my Full U.K driving licence. Thanks to the Driving School Leeds driving instructor.

Tia, Headingly, Passed at Horsforth, Leeds Test centre

I am a student at leeds University. I had seen a leaflet in my halls of residence in 2012. Apparently someone who had passed previously with Driving School Leeds had left the leaflet on the noticeboard. I was keen to learn and was wanting someone to teach me quickly. I contacted the driving instructor at Beeston Driving School leeds and we met at my student residence.

I had never taken any lessons and was very nervous. The driving instructor was very patient, and very funny and always had a way of making a joke about any fault I would make. He never shouted at me. I did sometimes make a serious mistake. The driving instructor was very flexible and very punctual. I would do two lessons per week each time so that I could grasp the driving test routes. I went for my first driving test attempt and passed. The driving instructor at Beeston Driving School Leeds was very good and focused on his job.The prices for full time students are really cheap. My mum said she remembers paying £15.00 pounds back in 1980's. Thanks once again for helping to get through so quickly. I would recommend all the students to go and learn from Driving School Leeds. He helped me to get through on my first attempt!

Dora Tembuza, Leeds University, Passed at Horsforth Test Centre.

I am a student at leeds University. I was searching for a Driving School in Leeds who I could learn with and I came across Beeston Driving School leeds on the Gumtree. I contacted the local driving instructor and we met at my Headingly student residence. I had taken a few lessons in Bristol many months back.I had to sort out my licence quickly to drive before I left Leeds to go back to Malaysia. In a very short space of time I got quickly driving on the test routes in Horseforth. The driving instructor was very flexible and very punctual. I would do two or three hours each time so that I could learn quickly. I went for my first attempt and passed. The driving instructor at Beeston Driving School Leeds was very understanding, He helped me to get through! The prices for full time students are really competitive. I got 10 hrs at £160, till I passed. The best price on the internet. I had to pass first time as all the women in our household have all passed their driving tests on their first attempt. I think because I got a nice driving test examiner and brilliant driving instructor. Thanks once again for helping to get through so quickly. My brother lost his bet. He thought I would fail first attempt. Thank you once again. I would recommend all the students to go and learn from Driving School Leeds.

Vinshal Irampan, Woodhouse, Leeds

I want to start by saying a big thanks to my driving instructor from Driving School leeds. I had come here as a student from India and could drive in my home country but never thought that getting a driving licence in the United Kingdom would be so difficult. when I started taking driving lessons with my driving instructor, he told me I had alot of bad habits that needed to be sorted. I used cross my hands when steering, I used to take the corners at a very fast pace and I also used to come into new roads without checking effectively. The driving instructor gave me a list of topics I had to work on before I could book my practical test at the Horseforth Test centre.

I took a few driving lessons and passed my driving test at Horseforth, Leeds. I was very nervous but the examiner helped me to relax. I had a good examiner and a very good driving instructor. I will be recommending my driving instructor to all my friends and colleagues at work.

Sahil Usman, Headingly, Leeds

I run a small teaching business in the heart of Leeds, I actually provide a out of school club. I had not taken any professional tuition. I met my driving instructor on the way to work. I took his mobile number from him as I was in a rush to get to work. I called him and he was very friendly and patient and booked me in for some driving lessons at my request in my available time slots. I think I did around 10 Hours of driving tuition. I went to the test centre all prepared and passed first time. I have to say that the driving instructor is very puntual, he was never late. Trained me so well that I knew exactly what I was doing on the day of the practical test. If anyone wants to pass quickly then call on 07881644635 to book now.

There are so many driving instructors out there and there are so many special offers available to pupils but I feel the best is Steer 2 Success,Driving School Leeds.

Adam Tai, Beeston,Leeds

I had taken lesson with a well established school, whose name I have been told not too mention. I was always the second option with this lady driving instructor, or she could only 1 lesson per week. I met my driving instructor through one of my close friends from school. On my first lesson I immediately realised that I had been taught incorrectly. The driving instructor at Beeston Driving School Leeds is a top lad, very patient and professional. He gave a special discounted rate for students. That's not the reason why I am saying all these good things about him.

I learnt fairly quickly I would say, considering all my family members passed second or third attempt at their practical driving test. I took around 30 hours of tuition from Beeston Driving School Leeds. The driving instructor supplied me with the theory CD and made me to understand how the hazard perception on the theory worked. I passed my theory first time. The driving instructor would make me drive around the test areas for Horseforth, Leeds.

On the last few weeks before I took my practical test we did role plays. This really helped me because I was very nervous at the thought of a test. On the day of my practical test I got the test route that I had done several times with the driving instructor. My brother had said that I would be really lucky if I passed as no one in the family had ever passed first time. Not only did I pass first time but also I got 2 minor faults. The examiner said I had done a good drive. I saved several hundred pounds by going with Beeston Driving School Leeds. I am now thinking of getting a car but I want to do my pass plus with Beeston Driving School Leeds. Waiting for my Pink licence to come through!

Amar Mahmood, age 19,Hyde Park, Leeds

I met my driving instructor at my cousins wedding, great guy!, He helped out at the wedding, that's not the reason why I am praising him here though! I had done an apprenticeship course and had been allowed to drive cars in and out of the garage whilst they were getting serviced. I knew a little clutch control. I chose to have first five lessons at £58.50. I took around 20 hours of tuition from Beeston Driving School Leeds.

The driving instructor supplied me with the theory CD and helped me to understand how the hazard perception on the theory worked. I passed my theory first time. The driving instructor would make me drive around different situations and in different areas. He then on the last 2 weeks before I took my practical test made me go around the test routes in Horseforth. On the day of my practical test I got the test route that I had done 2days before my test. I knew where I was going even before the examiner started the independent driving. I saved several hundred pounds by going with Beeston Driving School Leeds Instructor. I have told all my friends and cousins to go with my instructor.

Ayodele Labode, Harehills, Leeds

I want to say a BIG thanks to Beeston Driving School Leeds for helping to pass my driving test. I passed in Harehills. I came back to Leeds after studying in Birmingham for my degree. I had taken some driving lessons already in Birmingham but needed to get over my nerves. Going for any test or exam can be nerve wrecking.

I have to say that this whole driving experience has made me a better person. I enjoyed my driving lessons. The instructor was very friendly. He helped me to tackle my nerves. Each of my driving lessons till the day I passed was conducted professionally and also test simulated. The instructor is really good. He did role plays which really helped me on the driving test. I knew exactly what to expect on the day of my test. I will taking my passplus training with Beeston Driving School Leeds. Thanks again.

Iftikhaar Ali,(Dalton Barbers) Beeston, Leeds

I took my driving lessons from Beeston Driving School Leeds. Due to my work and availability I only did one lesson per week. The instructor would often arrive at my shop at our agreed time of the lessons and I would be busy with my clients cutting hair. He would wait for me and then we would conduct our lesson. I thought this was very kind of him.He helped me to achieve test standard driving.

I passed my driving at Harehills driving test centre and would recommend to all my customers wishing to learn driving to call Beeston Driving school Leeds. The driving school are very flexible with peoples needs beacause they picked me up from my shop and then dropped me home. I now will be taking my motorway lessons with them very soon.

Victor Domingos, Halton, Leeds

I had taken a few lessons with a private instructor before and was able to drive my own car but needed more guidance to pass my practical test. One of my friends recommended me to Beeston Driving School Leeds Driving Instructor.

I had a initial driving lesson to assess my driving skills. I was explained how many driving lessons I needed to pass my practical test. I did a mini crash course. It was very intense. I booked the practical test and then did around 15hrs of driving tuition and went to pass my practical test. The Driving instructor was very friendly and reliable. Always on time for my driving lessons.

I can now drive my car with full uk driving licence thanks to the driving instructor at Beeston Driving School Leeds.

Bakry Koita, Horseforth, Leeds

I just want to say a BIG thank you to the driving instructor at Beeston Driving School Leeds. I passed my test on my second attempt at Horseforth Test Centre, Leeds. The first time I was really nervous. I was fairly confident that I would pass on my first attempt. I had made a judgment error.

The examiner was very good but due to road works on the day of my test I had failed to see where I should postion my car to take a right turn. The driving instructor went over the same test route later and explained to me where I had gone wrong.

The second time I had a couple of lessons before the test and was feeling less confident but I passed with a few minor faults. It was a different examiner this time and he equally was very patient and friendly. Thanks to the expertise of the driving instructor at Beeston Driving School Leeds, I was able to pass my test. Now I just need to get a car.

Damien Cliffe, Harehills, Leeds

I took driving lessons with Beeston Driving School Leeds. I found the experience very enjoyable. I passed on my second attempt at Harehills.

The first the time I had made a mistake on judging a meeting situation, I still feel I should have passed first time around. The second time around my instructor went over the same test route that I had been on and he explained where I had gone wrong. The mock tests that Beeston Driving School Leeds instructor did with me really helped. It simulated exactly what was going to happen on the day of the test. I think my instructor was very understanding, patient and very friendly. would recommend him any day!'

Gustavo Damarchi, Harehills, Leeds

I am a driver from Brazil, I ride a motorbike for my job. understanding the roads and signs in the U.K was very hard for me. My instructor was the best. He explain to me everything I need to do for my driving test. It made it so easy.

I understand the roads more better now than before. My driving test has made be a better driver. Thanks to my instructor. He is very patient, always on time. I thank you again for helping me to pass my test.’

Damien Swann, Harehills, Leeds

This practical driving test is a mission to pass in Harehills, the roads are so complicated, the roundabouts have their own indidual layouts. The instructor from Beeston driving school leeds helped to pass me very quickly. He took me on the various routed and made sure i understand each roundabout.

I work part time, he fitted my lessons around my work and also because of my part time job, I got a good discount from the school. The best driving school around.’

Okechucko, Horsforth, Leeds

I had previously been taking driving lessons with a well known national driving school. I was fed up with my instructor, not making any progress very quick. I then approched Beeston Driving School Leeds. They introduced me to a different style of learning, I instantly started to learn quick.

I work shifts so timing the lessons was important, again the driving school was able to arrange around this. I passed on a saturday morning in Horseforth, I was ever so grateful to the driving instructor for getting me through. I appreciate the efforts. I will be recommending the instructor to all my friends and family.’

Louise, Leeds

I learnt to drive with Steer 2 Success Driving School, and all I have to say is that it was a great driving experience! The instructor at Steer 2 Success Driving School Leeds is very polite and friendly, which helped calm my nerves as I was extremely terrified with me being a completely new driver.

He started with the basics of driving then went on to teach me the more complicated manoeuvres such as parallel parking. the instrucor was very punctual, reliable teacher, always on time and always managed to fit lessons around my busy schedule. He is well mannered, extremely patient and always stayed calm if I did something wrong. As well as being serious about the field of work he is in, he is also very easy to have a laugh and a joke with!

Before I started my driving lessons I would never have imagined passing both my theory and practical tests first time, but with the help and support from Steer to Success local instructor, I really did ‘steer to success!’

Mohammed Qasim, Burley Road, Leeds

I was ever so keen to pass my driving practical test. My brothers and sisters had all passed and were all driving cars. I chose my driving instructor through a good friend of mine.I took 30hrs of driving tuition and passed in Horseforth Test centre.

I was always rushing and speeding and then my driving instructor made me realise the dangers of speeding. On the day of the practical test I was very calm and controlled about my driving. The examiner took me on the same driving test route that I had been taken by my driving instructor one day before my test. I knew exactly what to do on my Independent driving. I was so confident that I had passed that I was smiling all the way through. I would recommend Beeston Driving School Leeds for fast results.
